Juniper Junos on SRX flowd ICMP Packet input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Juniper Junos on SRX (Router Operating System) (the affected version unknown). Affected is an unknown part of the component flowd. The manipulation as part of a ICMP Packet leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

On SRX Series devices, a crafted ICMP packet embedded within a NAT64 IPv6 to IPv4 tunnel may cause the flowd process to crash. Repeated crashes of the flowd process constitutes an extended denial of service condition for the SRX Series device. This issue only occurs if NAT64 is configured. Affected releases are Juniper Networks Junos OS 12.1X46 prior to 12.1X46-D71, 12.3X48 prior to 12.3X48-D55, 15.1X49 prior to 15.1X49-D100 on SRX Series. No other Juniper Networks products or platforms are affected by this issue.

The bug was discovered 10/11/2017. The weakness was presented 10/13/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at kb.juniper.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-10610 since 06/28/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104034 (Juniper Junos SRX Flowd Crash Vulnerability (JSA10813)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43614 (Juniper Junos Denial Of Service Vulnerability (JSA10813)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling ICMP. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
