Apache Solr up to 7.0 Apache Lucene RunExecutableListener xml external entity reference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apache Solr up to 7.0 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function RunExecutableListener of the component Apache Lucene. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Remote code execution occurs in Apache Solr before 7.1 with Apache Lucene before 7.1 by exploiting XXE in conjunction with use of a Config API add-listener command to reach the RunExecutableListener class. Elasticsearch, although it uses Lucene, is NOT vulnerable to this.

The bug was discovered 09/22/2017. The weakness was published 10/14/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mail-archives.us.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-12629 since 08/07/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103843 (FreeBSD : solr -- Code execution via entity expansion (e837390d-0ceb-46b8-9b32-29c1195f5dc7)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236611 (Red Hat Update for JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 7.0.9 (RHSA-2018:0002)).

Upgrading to version 7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (43009), Tenable (103843) and SecurityFocus (BID 101261†). Similar entries are available at VDB-106589 and VDB-111695. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
