A vulnerability was found in Alienvault USM up to 5.4.2. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the file /ossim/report/wizard_email.php of the component Report Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is integrity. AlienVault USM v5.4.2 and earlier offers authenticated users the functionality of exporting generated reports via the "/ossim/report/wizard_email.php" script. Besides offering an export via a local download, the script also offers the possibility to send out any report via email to a given address (either in PDF or XLS format). Since there is no anti-CSRF token protecting this functionality, it is vulnerable to Cross-Site Request Forgery attacks.
The bug was discovered 10/13/2017. The weakness was shared 10/18/2017 by Julien Ahrens as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-14956 since 10/01/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:ossim/report/wizard_email.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
