Details
A vulnerability was found in musl Libc up to 1.1.16. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the file network/lookup_name.c of the component DNS Reply Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
musl libc before 1.1.17 has a buffer overflow via crafted DNS replies because dns_parse_callback in network/lookup_name.c does not restrict the number of addresses, and thus an attacker can provide an unexpected number by sending A records in a reply to an AAAA query.
The bug was discovered 10/19/2017. The weakness was shared 10/19/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.musl-libc.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-15650 since 10/19/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
