Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Nokia IPSO 3.x (Firewall Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component OpenSSH. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
OpenSSH-portable (OpenSSH) 3.6.1p1 and earlier with PAM support enabled immediately sends an error message when a user does not exist, which allows remote attackers to determine valid usernames via a timing attack.
The bug was discovered 04/30/2003. The weakness was presented 12/24/2004 by Sebastian Krahmer with Nokia (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0190 since 04/01/2003. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20650 (Ubuntu 4.10 : openssh information leakage (USN-34-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38190 (OpenSSH-portable Enabled PAM Delay Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 3.6.1p2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at nokia.com.It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11902), Exploit-DB (25), Tenable (20650), SecurityFocus (BID 7342†) and OSVDB (2140†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
