A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.26 (Software Library). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function glob of the file glob.c. The manipulation as part of a User Name leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The glob function in glob.c in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) before 2.27, when invoked with GLOB_TILDE, could skip freeing allocated memory when processing the ~ operator with a long user name, potentially leading to a denial of service (memory leak).
The bug was discovered 10/20/2017. The weakness was shared 10/20/2017 by Florian Weimer as Bug 22325 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-15671 since 10/20/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
