Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 10.3.3 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component libexpat. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An integer overflow during the parsing of XML using the Expat library. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 50.
The bug was discovered 11/15/2016. The weakness was shared 09/25/2017 by Abdulrahman Alqabandi (Nils) with Mozilla as HT208112 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9063 since 10/27/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely.
