A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15.7 ESD 2. Affected is the function XMLParse of the component XML External Entity Handler. The manipulation with the input value SELECT xmlextract leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The XMLParse procedure in SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) 15.7 ESD 2 allows remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via a SQL statement containing an XML document with an external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, related to an XML External Entity (XXE) issue.
The weakness was presented 10/01/2013 by Igor Bulatenko as VU#303900 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6025 since 10/04/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
A public exploit has been developed in XML and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at kb.cert.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 266 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sybase.com. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable XXE.
