A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple tvOS up to 10.2.2 (Digital Media Player). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Wi-Fi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 07/12/2017. The weakness was published 09/25/2017 by Gal Beniamini with Google Project Zero as HT208113 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-11121 since 07/09/2017. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved memory handling.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 72 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103419 (Apple TV < 11 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371700 (Broadcom WiFi Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (LEN-17237)).
Upgrading to version 11.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
