A vulnerability was found in OpenSSH up to 7.5 (Connectivity Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function process_open of the file sftp-server.c of the component Readonly Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a permission vulnerability. The process_open function in sftp-server.c in OpenSSH before 7.6 does not properly prevent write operations in readonly mode, which allows attackers to create zero-length files.
The bug was discovered 10/04/2017. The weakness was disclosed 10/26/2017 by Natalie Silvanovich with Microsoft Vulnerability Research (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-15906 since 10/25/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1222 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197025 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Openssh Vulnerabilities (USN-3538-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
