F5 BIG-IP up to 11.2.1/11.5.4/11.6.1/12.1.2 TLS Protection resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in F5 BIG-IP up to 11.2.1/11.5.4/11.6.1/12.1.2 (Firewall Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code of the component TLS Protection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In F5 BIG-IP LTM, AAM, AFM, Analytics, APM, ASM, DNS, Edge Gateway, GTM, Link Controller, PEM, WebAccelerator software version 12.0.0 - 12.1.2, 11.6.0 - 11.6.1, 11.4.0 - 11.5.4, 11.2.1, when ConfigSync is configured, attackers on adjacent networks may be able to bypass the TLS protections usually used to encrypted and authenticate connections to mcpd. This vulnerability may allow remote attackers to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) attack via resource exhaustion.

The bug was discovered 10/26/2017. The weakness was published 10/27/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.f5.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-6161 since 02/21/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104193 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : ConfigSync mcpd vulnerability (K62279530)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370632 (F5 BIG-IP ConfigSync mcpd Denial Of Service Vulnerability (K62279530)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104193) and SecurityFocus (BID 101636†). Similar entries are available at VDB-108737, VDB-108736, VDB-108734 and VDB-108733. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
