A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg 1.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function vc1_decode_frame of the file libavcodec/vc1dec.c of the component Slice Header Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 01/06/2013. The weakness was shared 02/19/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as vc1dec: dont decode slices when the slice header failed to decode. as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
