Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Node.js up to 4.8.4/6.11.4/8.7.x (JavaScript Library). This affects an unknown function of the component zlib. The manipulation of the argument windowBits as part of a Parameter leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Node.js before 4.8.5, 6.x before 6.11.5, and 8.x before 8.8.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (uncaught exception and crash) by leveraging a change in the zlib module 1.2.9 making 8 an invalid value for the windowBits parameter.
The bug was discovered 10/24/2017. The weakness was released 10/30/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at nodejs.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-14919 since 09/28/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104198 (FreeBSD : Node.js -- remote DOS security vulnerability (d7d1cc94-b971-11e7-af3a-f1035dd0da62)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276960 (Fedora Security Update for nodejs (FEDORA-2017-c582c1e728)).
Upgrading to version 4.8.5, 6.11.5 or 8.8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104198) and SecurityFocus (BID 101881†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
