Details
A vulnerability was found in Enalean Tuleap up to 9.6 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function User::getRecentElements of the component REST API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in Enalean Tuleap 9.6 and prior versions. The vulnerability exists because the User::getRecentElements() method is using the unserialize() function with a preference value that can be arbitrarily manipulated by malicious users through the REST API interface, and this can be exploited to inject arbitrary PHP objects into the application scope, allowing an attacker to perform a variety of attacks (including but not limited to Remote Code Execution).
The bug was discovered 10/23/2017. The weakness was released 10/30/2017 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-7411 since 04/03/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11905 (Tuleap 9.6 Second-Order PHP Object Injection).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
