Details
A vulnerability was found in MongoDB up to 3.4.9 (Database Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function networkMessageCompressors. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
MongoDB 3.4.x before 3.4.10, and 3.5.x-development, has a disabled-by-default configuration setting, networkMessageCompressors (aka wire protocol compression), which exposes a vulnerability when enabled that could be exploited by a malicious attacker to deny service or modify memory.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2017. The weakness was shared 11/01/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at jira.mongodb.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-15535 since 10/17/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104614 (openSUSE Security Update : mongodb (openSUSE-2017-1275)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 20057 (MongoDB Wire Protocol Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 3.4.10 or 3.5.x-development eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
