Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Perl 5.6.1/5.8.4. Affected by this vulnerability is the function File::Path::rmtree. Performing a manipulation results in race condition.
This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2004-0452. The attack must originate from the local network. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.
It is advised to substitute the affected component with an alternative.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Perl 5.6.1/5.8.4 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function File::Path::rmtree. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the rmtree function in the File::Path module in Perl 5.6.1 and 5.8.4 sets read/write permissions for the world, which allows local users to delete arbitrary files and directories, and possibly read files and directories, via a symlink attack.
The bug was discovered 12/23/2004. The weakness was shared 12/26/2004 by Paul Szabo (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0452 since 05/06/2004. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19112 (FreeBSD : perl -- File::Path insecure file/directory permissions (c418d472-6bd1-11d9-93ca-000a95bc6fae)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121527 (Solaris Multiple Vulnerabilities in Perl 5.8).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at perl.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18650), Tenable (19112), SecurityFocus (BID 12072†), OSVDB (12588†) and Secunia (SA13643†). The entries VDB-955, VDB-1172, VDB-1270 and VDB-27528 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
