Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU C Library 2.16 (Software Library). Affected by this issue is the function gethosts of the file sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was disclosed 10/22/2013 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceware.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
