Digium Asterisk CDR Handller memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk (Communications System) (version now known). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component CDR Handller. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A Buffer Overflow issue was discovered in Asterisk Open Source 13 before 13.18.1, 14 before 14.7.1, and 15 before 15.1.1 and Certified Asterisk 13.13 before 13.13-cert7. No size checking is done when setting the user field for Party B on a CDR. Thus, it is possible for someone to use an arbitrarily large string and write past the end of the user field storage buffer. NOTE: this is different from CVE-2017-7617, which was only about the Party A buffer.

The bug was discovered 10/25/2017. The weakness was released 11/09/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at downloads.digium.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-16671 since 11/08/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104658 (Asterisk 13.x < 13.18.1 / 14.x < 14.7.1 / 15.x < 15.1.1 / 13.13 < 13.13-cert7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (AST-2017-009 - AST-2017-011)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176261 (Debian Security Update for asterisk (DSA 4076-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104658) and SecurityFocus (BID 101760†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-109242, VDB-110152 and VDB-110667. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
