Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in libav up to 11.11/12.1 (Multimedia Player Software). This affects the function build_table of the file libavcodec/smacker.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Libav through 11.11 and 12.x through 12.1, the smacker_decode_tree function in libavcodec/smacker.c does not properly restrict tree recursion, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (bitstream.c:build_table() out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted Smacker stream.
The bug was discovered 11/15/2017. The weakness was presented 11/13/2017 as Bug 1098 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.libav.org.
