Details
A vulnerability was found in Symantec ITMS up to 8.1 RU3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component Management Console. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Prior to ITMS 8.1 RU4, the Symantec Management Console can be susceptible to a directory traversal exploit, which is a type of attack that can occur when there is insufficient security validation / sanitization of user-supplied input file names, such that characters representing "traverse to parent directory" are passed through to the file APIs.
The bug was discovered 11/20/2017. The weakness was disclosed 11/20/2017 by Christoffer Wiman as SYM17-013 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at symantec.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-15527 since 10/17/2017. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104972 (Symantec Management Console File Name Handling Path Traversal Remote Access (SYM17-013)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
Applying the patch 8.1 RU4 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104972) and SecurityFocus (BID 101743†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
