Intel Manageability Engine up to 11.20 Active Management Technology memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Intel Manageability Engine up to 11.20 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Active Management Technology. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in Active Management Technology (AMT) in Intel Manageability Engine Firmware 8.x/9.x/10.x/11.0/11.5/11.6/11.7/11.10/11.20 allow attacker with local access to the system to execute arbitrary code with AMT execution privilege.

The bug was discovered 11/20/2017. The weakness was shared 11/20/2017 as INTEL-SA-00086 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at security-center.intel.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-5711 since 02/01/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

In response to issues identified by external researchers, Intel has performed an in-depth comprehensive security review of our Intel® Management Engine (ME), Intel® Server Platform Services (SPS), and Intel® Trusted Execution Engine (TXE) with the objective of enhancing firmware resilience. As a result, Intel has identified security vulnerabilities that could potentially place impacted platforms at risk.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38693 (Intel Active Management Technology Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
