Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Bazaar up to 2.7.0. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SSH Subprocess. The manipulation as part of a Hostname leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Bazaar through 2.7.0, when Subprocess SSH is used, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a bzr+ssh URL with an initial dash character in the hostname, a related issue to CVE-2017-9800, CVE-2017-12836, CVE-2017-12976, CVE-2017-16228, CVE-2017-1000116, and CVE-2017-1000117.
The bug was discovered 08/15/2017. The weakness was disclosed 11/27/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at people.canonical.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-14176 since 09/07/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 39 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103429 (Debian DLA-1107-1 : bzr security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171189 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for bzr (SUSE-SU-2018:1489-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
