The manipulation with the input value res://shdoclc.dll/HTTP_501.htm#javascript:%2f*://*%2falert(location.href)/ leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. The Custom HTTP Errors capability in Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute script in the Local Zone via an argument to shdocvw.dll that causes a "javascript:" link to be generated.

The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was published 06/17/2003 by GreyMagic with GreyMagic Software, Israel (Website). The advisory is available at sec.greymagic.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0447 since 06/19/2003. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
