Linux Kernel up to 4.14.1 mm/pagewalk.c mincore Kernel Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 4.14.1. Affected by this issue is the function mincore of the file mm/pagewalk.c. This manipulation causes information disclosure (Kernel Memory). This vulnerability appears as CVE-2017-16994. The attack requires local access. In addition, an exploit is available. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.14.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function mincore of the file mm/pagewalk.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The walk_hugetlb_range function in mm/pagewalk.c in the Linux kernel before 4.14.2 mishandles holes in hugetlb ranges, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from uninitialized kernel memory via crafted use of the mincore() system call.

The bug was discovered 11/15/2017. The weakness was presented 11/27/2017 by Jann Horn as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-16994 since 11/27/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104943 (Fedora 26 : kernel (2017-f9f3d80442)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276998 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2017-905bb449bc)).

Upgrading to version 4.14.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (43178), Tenable (104943) and SecurityFocus (BID 101969†). See VDB-109189, VDB-109190, VDB-109191 and VDB-109192 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
