Cisco Umbrella Virtual Appliance up to 2.0.3 SSH 7pk security

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Cisco Umbrella Virtual Appliance up to 2.0.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component SSH. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a 7pk security vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-254. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Cisco Umbrella Virtual Appliance Version 2.0.3 and prior contained an undocumented encrypted remote support tunnel (SSH) which auto initiated from the customer's appliance to Cisco's SSH Hubs in the Umbrella datacenters. These tunnels were primarily leveraged for remote support and allowed for authorized/authenticated personnel from the Cisco Umbrella team to access the appliance remotely and obtain full control without explicit customer approval. To address this vulnerability, the Umbrella Virtual Appliance version 2.1.0 now requires explicit customer approval before an SSH tunnel from the VA to the Cisco terminating server can be established.

The bug was discovered 09/21/2017. The weakness was published 12/01/2017 by David Coomber (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-6679 since 03/09/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation.
