A vulnerability has been found in Squid Proxy up to 2.5.STABLE7 (Firewall Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function fakeauth_auth of the component NTLM Type 3 Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The NTLM component in Squid 2.5.STABLE7 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a malformed NTLM type 3 message that triggers a NULL dereference.
The bug was discovered 01/10/2005. The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2005 with Squid Team (Website). The advisory is available at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0097 since 01/18/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18947 (FreeBSD : squid -- denial-of-service vulnerabilities (5bf1a715-cc57-440f-b0a5-6406961c54a7)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at squid-cache.org. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
