Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Cisco ASA 5500 (Firewall Software) (the affected version is unknown). This affects an unknown code of the component TLS Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability (Bleichenbacher). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A vulnerability in the TLS protocol implementation of legacy Cisco ASA 5500 Series (ASA 5505, 5510, 5520, 5540, and 5550) devices could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to access sensitive information, aka a Return of Bleichenbacher's Oracle Threat (ROBOT) attack. An attacker could iteratively query a server running a vulnerable TLS stack implementation to perform cryptanalytic operations that may allow decryption of previously captured TLS sessions. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvg97652.
The bug was discovered 12/12/2017. The weakness was shared 12/15/2017 by Juraj Somorovsky with Tripwire VERT as cisco-sa-20171212-bleichenbach as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-12373 since 08/03/2017. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105415 (Return Of Bleichenbacher's Oracle Threat (ROBOT) Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family General and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38695 (TLS ROBOT Vulnerability Detected).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
