Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.3.1. Impacted is an unknown function of the file page_alloc_lock/grant_alloc_lock of the component Lock Order. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4494. Additionally, an exploit exists. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.3.1 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file page_alloc_lock/grant_alloc_lock of the component Lock Order. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Xen before 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and 4.3.x does not take the page_alloc_lock and grant_table.lock in the same order, which allows local guest administrators with access to multiple vcpus to cause a denial of service (host deadlock) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 11/01/2013 by Andrew Cooper and Coverity Scan Project as Xen Security Advisory 73 - Lock order reversal between page allocation and grant table locks as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with Linux Foundation. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4494 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71393 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : Xen (SAT Patch Number 8577)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370041 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX140038)).
Applying the patch xsa73-4.3-unstable.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71393), SecurityFocus (BID 63494†), OSVDB (99257†), Secunia (SA55200†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42322†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-11329. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
