Ubiquiti UniFi Video before 3.8.0 for Windows uses weak permissions for the installation directory, which allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges via a Trojan horse taskkill.exe file.
The bug was discovered 12/24/2017. The weakness was shared 12/22/2017 by Julien Ahrens (window) as [CVE-2016-6914] Ubiquiti UniFi Video v3.7.3 (Windows) Local Privileges Escalation via Insecure Directory Permissions as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-6914 since 08/22/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1222 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
