Enigmail up to 1.9.8 Regular Expression cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Enigmail up to 1.9.8 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Regular Expression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in Enigmail before 1.9.9 that allows remote attackers to trigger use of an intended public key for encryption, because incorrect regular expressions are used for extraction of an e-mail address from a comma-separated list, as demonstrated by a modified Full Name field and a homograph attack, aka TBE-01-002.

The bug was discovered 12/22/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/27/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-17843 since 12/22/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105430 (Debian DSA-4070-1 : enigmail - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.9.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (105430). The entries VDB-111048, VDB-111049, VDB-111050 and VDB-111051 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
