Details
A vulnerability was found in Joomla CMS 2.5.14/3.1.5 (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file com_contact of the component Contact Form. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 11/06/2013 by Osanda Malith as JOOMLA! 3.2.0 STABLE RELEASED as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at developer.joomla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Joomla. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 2.5.15, 3.1.6 or 3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at joomlacode.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
