A vulnerability has been found in Mistune up to 0.8.0 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function keyify of the file mistune.py. The manipulation of the argument key as part of a Argument leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the _keyify function in mistune.py in Mistune before 0.8.1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML by leveraging failure to escape the "key" argument.
The bug was discovered 11/17/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/29/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-16876 since 11/17/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

Upgrading to version 0.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
