Details
A vulnerability has been found in OpenCV up to 3.3 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function FillUniColor/FillUniGray of the file opencv/modules/imgcodecs/src/utils.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In opencv/modules/imgcodecs/src/utils.cpp, functions FillUniColor and FillUniGray do not check the input length, which can lead to integer overflow. If the image is from remote, may lead to remote code execution or denial of service. This affects Opencv 3.3 and earlier.
The bug was discovered 09/27/2017. The weakness was presented 01/02/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-1000450 since 01/02/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 97 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105662 (Debian DLA-1235-1 : opencv security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171252 (OpenSUSE Security Update for opencv (openSUSE-SU-2018:1438-1)).
