Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.35/4.10 (Operating System). This affects the function tcpmss_mangle_packet of the file net/netfilter/xt_TCPMSS.c. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The tcpmss_mangle_packet function in net/netfilter/xt_TCPMSS.c in the Linux kernel before 4.11, and 4.9.x before 4.9.36, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the presence of xt_TCPMSS in an iptables action.
The bug was discovered 04/08/2017. The weakness was presented 01/03/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-18017 since 01/03/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 270 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106406 (EulerOS 2.0 SP1 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2018-1031)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157858 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2018-4268)).
Upgrading to version 4.9.36 or 4.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (106406), SecurityFocus (BID 102367†) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2022-0532). See VDB-110197, VDB-110288, VDB-110317 and VDB-111171 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
