A vulnerability was found in Google Android (Smartphone Operating System) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Ashmem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 01/05/2018. The weakness was presented 01/02/2018 by Hao Liu as Android Security Bulletin - January 2018 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at source.android.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-13216 since 08/23/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 6 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351264 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-003).
