QEMU up to 2.14.2 VNC Server input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in QEMU up to 2.14.2 (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component VNC Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

VNC server implementation in Quick Emulator (QEMU) before 2.14.3 was found to be vulnerable to an unbounded memory allocation issue, as it did not throttle the framebuffer updates sent to its client. If the client did not consume these updates, VNC server allocates growing memory to hold onto this data. A malicious remote VNC client could use this flaw to cause DoS to the server host.

The bug was discovered 12/12/2017. The weakness was shared 01/09/2018 as Bug 1525195 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-15124 since 10/08/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106927 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 17.10 : qemu vulnerabilities (USN-3575-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157870 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (ELSA-2018-4285)).

Upgrading to version 2.14.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (106927) and SecurityFocus (BID 100540†). The entries VDB-104779, VDB-104780, VDB-105675 and VDB-105918 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
