Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac allows an attacker to send a specially crafted email attachment to a user in an attempt to launch a social engineering attack, such as phishing, due to how Outlook for Mac displays encoded email addresses, aka "Spoofing Vulnerability in Microsoft Office for Mac."
The bug was discovered 01/09/2018. The weakness was published 01/09/2018 by Sabri Haddouche with Wire Swiss GmbH as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared for download at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-0819 since 12/01/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
A spoofing vulnerability exists when Microsoft Outlook for MAC does not properly handle the encoding and display of email addresses. This improper handling and display may cause antivirus or antispam scanning to not work as intended.
