Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in FasterXML jackson-databind up to 2.8.10/2.9.3 (Programming Language Software). Affected is the function readValue of the component Incomplete Fix CVE-2017-7525. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
FasterXML jackson-databind through 2.8.10 and 2.9.x through 2.9.3 allows unauthenticated remote code execution because of an incomplete fix for the CVE-2017-7525 deserialization flaw. This is exploitable by sending maliciously crafted JSON input to the readValue method of the ObjectMapper, bypassing a blacklist that is ineffective if the Spring libraries are available in the classpath.
The weakness was presented 01/10/2018 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-17485 since 12/10/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106853 (Debian DSA-4114-1 : jackson-databind - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236672 (Red Hat Update for jboss-ec2-eap package for EAP 7.1.1 (RHSA-2018:0481)).
Applying the patch 2.6.7.3/2.7.9.2/2.8.11/2.9.x is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
