A vulnerability was found in transmission up to 2.92 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file /transmission/rpc of the component Access Control. The manipulation as part of a POST Request leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Transmission through 2.92 relies on X-Transmission-Session-Id (which is not a forbidden header for Fetch) for access control, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary RPC commands, and consequently write to arbitrary files, via POST requests to /transmission/rpc in conjunction with a DNS rebinding attack.
The bug was discovered 11/29/2017. The weakness was presented 01/15/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.chromium.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-5702 since 01/15/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 47 days.
