Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Guacamole Terminal Emulator up to 0.9.10-incubating. This affects an unknown functionality of the component Printed Data Handler. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A race condition in Guacamole's terminal emulator in versions 0.9.5 through 0.9.10-incubating could allow writes of blocks of printed data to overlap. Such overlapping writes could cause packet data to be misread as the packet length, resulting in the remaining data being written beyond the end of a statically-allocated buffer.
The bug was discovered 01/08/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/18/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-3158 since 12/05/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
