A vulnerability was found in X.org X11 Server up to 1.19.4 (Windowing System Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ProcEstablishConnection. xorg-x11-server before 1.19.5 was missing extra length validation in ProcEstablishConnection function allowing malicious X client to cause X server to crash or possibly execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 10/12/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/24/2018 as Bug 1509214 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-12176 since 08/01/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 41 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104745 (Debian DLA-1186-1 : xorg-server security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170492 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xorg-x11-server (SUSE-SU-2017:3047-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.19.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
