A vulnerability has been found in X.org X11 Server up to 1.19.4 (Windowing System Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component XFree86 DGA Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. xorg-x11-server before 1.19.5 was missing length validation in XFree86 DGA extension allowing malicious X client to cause X server to crash or possibly execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 10/12/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/24/2018 as Bug 1509222 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-12181 since 08/01/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 41 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104776 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : xorg-x11-server (SUSE-SU-2017:3047-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196948 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Xorg-server, Xorg-server-hwe-16.04, Xorg-server-lts-xenial Vulnerabilities (USN-3456-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.19.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
