A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in w3m up to 0.5.3 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file ~/.w3m of the component Temp File Handler. w3m through 0.5.3 does not properly handle temporary files when the ~/.w3m directory is unwritable, which allows a local attacker to craft a symlink attack to overwrite arbitrary files.
The bug was discovered 01/20/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/25/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-6198 since 01/24/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
