Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Drupal (Content Management System). Affected is the function mt_rand of the component Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Drupal 6.x before 6.29 and 7.x before 7.24 uses the PHP mt_rand function to generate random numbers, which uses predictable seeds and allows remote attackers to predict security strings and bypass intended restrictions via a brute force attack.
The weakness was shared 11/20/2013 by David Stoline with Drupal Security Team as SA-CORE-2013-003 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at drupal.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6386 since 11/04/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71098 (Debian DSA-2804-1 : drupal7 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12786 (Drupal Core Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (SA-CORE-2013-003)).
Upgrading to version 7.24 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89170), Tenable (71098), SecurityFocus (BID 63840†), OSVDB (100037†) and Secunia (SA55713†).
