Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ClamAV Antivirus Software up to 0.99.2 (Anti-Malware Software). Affected is the function rfc2047 of the file mbox.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The ClamAV AntiVirus software versions 0.99.2 and prior contain a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device. The vulnerability is due to a lack of input validation checking mechanisms during certain mail parsing functions (the rfc2047 function in mbox.c). An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted email to the affected device. This action could cause a buffer overflow condition when ClamAV scans the malicious email, allowing the attacker to potentially cause a DoS condition on an affected device.
The bug was discovered 01/25/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at blog.clamav.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-12375 since 08/03/2017.
