Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNU binutils 2.29.1 (Programming Tool Software). This affects the function elf_object_p of the file elfcode.h of the component libbfd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The elf_object_p function in elfcode.h in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.29.1, has an unsigned integer overflow because bfd_size_type multiplication is not used. A crafted ELF file allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact.
The bug was discovered 01/25/2018. The weakness was shared 01/26/2018 as Bug 22746 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-6323 since 01/26/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108467 (EulerOS 2.0 SP2 : binutils (EulerOS-SA-2018-1063)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351475 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for binutils: ALAS2-2019-1138).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (44035), Tenable (108467) and SecurityFocus (BID 102821†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
