Check Point Endpoint Security 4.97.2 Password Policy Unlock.exe credentials management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Check Point Endpoint Security 4.97.2. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file Unlock.exe of the component Password Policy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-255. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Media Encryption EPM Explorer in Check Point Endpoint Security through E80.50 does not properly maintain the state of password failures, which makes it easier for physically proximate attackers to bypass the device-locking protection mechanism by entering password guesses within multiple Unlock.exe processes that are running simultaneously.

The bug was discovered 12/16/2012. The weakness was disclosed 11/14/2013 by Pedro Andujar with Digital Security Research Group as Checkpoint Endpoint Security Media Encryption EPM Explorer Bypass as not defined advisory (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared for download at digitalsec.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-5635 since 08/27/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1552.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 330 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89822), SecurityFocus (BID 64026†), OSVDB (100086†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42773†). The entry VDB-11341 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
