A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 11.2.4 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality.
The bug was discovered 01/23/2018. The weakness was published 01/26/2018 by Stefan Esser with Google Project Zero as HT208463 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-4092. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370738 (Apple macOS High Sierra 10.13.3, Security Update 2018-001 Sierra, and Security Update 2018-001 El Capitan Not Installed (Meltdown)).
Upgrading to version 11.2.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
