Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 4.12.3. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file drivers/input/serio/i8042.c. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2017-18079. The attack is only possible with local access. There is not any exploit available. To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.12.3 (Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the file drivers/input/serio/i8042.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
drivers/input/serio/i8042.c in the Linux kernel before 4.12.4 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact because the port->exists value can change after it is validated.
The bug was discovered 01/28/2018. The weakness was released 01/29/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-18079 since 01/28/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107055 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:0555-1) (Meltdown) (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157889 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2019-4315)).
Upgrading to version drivers, input, serio or i8042.c eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (107055) and SecurityFocus (BID 106109†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-106966, VDB-112329, VDB-113129 and VDB-114165.
