The "get_pipe()" function (drivers/usb/usbip/stub_rx.c) in the Linux Kernel before version 4.14.8, 4.9.71, and 4.4.114 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a specially crafted USB over IP packet.
The bug was discovered 12/11/2017. The weakness was released 01/31/2018 by Jakub Jirasek with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-16912 since 11/21/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 51 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108748 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:0848-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 4.4.114, 4.9.71 or 4.14.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
